QR Code Print Size and Scanning Distance Guide

Choose QR print size from the actual symbol, printer and viewing conditions. QR Code Generator can export SVG artwork, but a vector file alone cannot establish that a phone will read the finished print.

Three review steps: QR Code Print Size and Scanning Distance Guide
Review the source, inspect the output and test the finished result.

Calculate module size from the symbol you have

Read the actual module count of the generated symbol. Version v has 21 + 4 × (v − 1) modules per side. Add eight modules for a four-module quiet zone on each side. URL character count alone does not determine version: encoding mode and error correction matter.

For a Version 3 symbol, the data square is 29 modules wide. A 22.2 mm total width including the margin gives 22.2 / 37 = 0.6 mm per module. This is an illustrative geometry calculation, not a universal safe print size.

Total width = (modules per side + 8) × module size
Version 3: (29 + 8) × 0.6 mm = 22.2 mm
At 300 printer dots/inch: 6 dots/module ≈ 0.508 mm/module

Choose a proof size for the intended distance

Start with a size your printer can reproduce cleanly and your readers can approach comfortably. Increase it when the viewing distance grows or light and focus are poor. A distance-to-width ratio can be a starting heuristic, but 10:1 is not a physical or specification minimum.

Check the proof at the closest and furthest intended distances. Keep the payload, correction level and surrounding design fixed during comparisons. A small code on smooth paper and a large code behind reflective glass need different tests.

Export and approve the actual artwork

Prefer SVG when the printer accepts vectors. For raster artwork, preserve square modules and adequate source resolution instead of enlarging a screenshot. Inspect a raster rendering with QR Code Scanner, then test the physical proof.

Specify whether the quoted print width includes the quiet zone. Keep a record of module count, final width, correction level and proof conditions. A higher correction level may increase the required symbol version; recompute the geometry rather than adding an arbitrary percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Does a print width include the blank border?

Specify that explicitly. The worked total-width calculation includes four modules of quiet zone on each side.

Does URL length determine the QR version?

Not by itself. Encoding mode and correction level also affect capacity; inspect the generated symbol.

Is the 10:1 distance rule a guaranteed minimum?

No. It is a possible starting heuristic, not a specification or a substitute for testing the actual print and devices.
