Tip Calculator
Work out a tip and split the bill.
Results appear here.
What the result means
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percent and divided by one hundred. A tip of zero is allowed, and the total is then just the bill. Negative bills and negative tips are refused. The people count must be a whole number of at least one. Money is rounded to the nearest cent before the split. Each person is given the same rounded share of the total. If the cents do not divide evenly, the leftover cents are added to the last person, and the result says so. The first people do not pay that remainder. This is ordinary rounding, not a suggestion about who should be generous. Tax is not separated from the bill you type.

Questions
How is the split rounded?
The bill and the tip are rounded to the nearest cent, then added. Each person gets an equal share of those cents, rounded down. Leftover cents are added to the last person, and the result says when the shares differ.
Can the tip be zero?
Yes. A tip of zero is valid, and the total is the bill alone. A negative tip is rejected. The bill must be zero or greater.
Who pays the extra cents?
The last person pays them. Everyone else pays the lower equal share. If the cents divide evenly, every share is the same and the result says so.
