Word Counter
Count words, characters and lines as you type.

What the result means
The numbers update as you type, and they also run once when the page loads. A word is whatever is left after splitting on whitespace and dropping empty pieces. That is not a word-processor count: hyphens are not special, and numbers are not skipped. Characters are Unicode code points, so a basic emoji counts as one character instead of being dropped. Characters without spaces leave out whitespace, including line breaks. Lines are 0 when the box is empty. Otherwise the text is split on line breaks, and a break at the end counts as an extra line. An emoji with spaces on both sides is one word. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions
How is a word counted?
A word is a stretch of text between whitespace, and empty stretches are dropped. Hyphenated words stay one word, and numbers count. This is not the count a word processor shows.
Does it count emoji?
Yes. Emoji count as characters, and an emoji with spaces on both sides is one word. Character totals use Unicode code points, so a basic emoji is one character. Some emoji are several code points and then count as more than one character.
Why does the line count include a blank at the end?
Lines are 0 only when the box is empty. Any other text is split on line breaks, so a final Enter adds one more line. That trailing line is empty, and it is still a line.
