BMI Calculator

Calculate body mass index from height and weight.

Results appear here.

What the result means

Body mass index is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Metric entries are used as typed, with centimeters turned into meters. Imperial entries are converted first: pounds to kilograms and inches to meters, using 0.45359237 kilograms per pound and 0.0254 meters per inch. The result is shown to one decimal. The bands are the usual WHO screening cutoffs: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obese. The band follows the rounded figure on the page. A non-positive height or weight is rejected. The banner on the form is the limit that matters: this is a screening number, not a diagnosis.

Questions

What is a normal BMI?

On these WHO screening bands, normal is 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obese. The page applies those cutoffs after rounding the BMI to one decimal.

Is BMI a diagnosis?

No. It is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not measure fat, muscle, or health by itself. The banner on the form states that limit.

How are pounds and inches converted?

Pounds are multiplied by 0.45359237 to get kilograms. Inches are multiplied by 0.0254 to get meters. BMI is then kilograms divided by meters squared, the same formula used for metric entries.
