Bytes to MB
Convert bytes, kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes. Binary and decimal.

What the result means
Computers often count a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, while disk labels and many network figures use 1000. This page shows both and does not treat them as the same quantity. The unit menu says KB, MB, GB, or TB. The checkbox decides what that name means for the number you typed. Leave it off and the input is a binary unit: KB means kibibyte, a power of 1024. Tick the decimal control and KB means 1000 bytes. Either way, both columns are filled. The binary column is labeled KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB. The decimal column is labeled KB, MB, GB, and TB. A tebibyte is 1024 to the fourth power bytes. A negative value is rejected.

Questions
Is a megabyte 1000 or 1024?
Both conventions are in use, and they are not equal. Leave the box off and the input is a binary megabyte, 1024 squared bytes, also called a mebibyte. Tick the box and a megabyte is 1000 squared bytes. The other column is still shown.
What is a tebibyte?
A tebibyte is 1024^4 bytes, which is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. The binary column labels that TiB. A terabyte is 1000^4 bytes and is not the same amount.
Which column matches what I typed?
The checkbox chooses the meaning of the selected unit. Off means the binary column is the source, using powers of 1024. On means the decimal column is the source, using powers of 1000. A plain byte is the same in both columns.
