Results

What the result means

The report compares the URLs declared in two sitemap inventories. Removed URLs appear only in the baseline; added URLs appear only in the new inventory. Origin mapping pairs production and staging paths while retaining both original addresses. Metadata changes show sitemap lastmod, changefreq and priority values, not page titles or content. Directory totals help identify a missing section even when individual URLs have moved. Ambiguous matches expose URLs merged by your comparison settings. Redirect suggestions use path similarity and require manual review. A URL missing from a sitemap may still return a successful page. Use live destination checks and the Redirect Checker before deploying reviewed rules. Google ignores sitemap priority and changefreq; changed lastmod alone does not prove a content change.

Questions

Can I compare staging and production sitemaps?

Yes. Map the exact before origin to the after origin to compare corresponding paths. For password-protected staging, upload exported files instead of fetching a URL.

Does a removed sitemap URL need a redirect?

Not necessarily. It may still exist or be intentionally excluded. Inspect the live page and choose a relevant replacement only when content has moved.

Can this follow sitemap index files?

Live fetching follows child sitemap files within the stated limits. For local comparisons, select the index and all referenced child files together.

How are redirect destinations suggested?

Matching paths on another origin receive higher confidence; similar path words receive lower confidence. Every suggestion needs manual review and none is automatically approved.

Are my sitemap files uploaded anywhere?

No. Files and pasted inventories are parsed locally in a browser worker. Only public URLs you choose to fetch or check are sent to PageUtil.
