What the result means

Regional spreadsheet settings dictate formula punctuation based on the local decimal separator. In standard US and UK locales where a period is the decimal mark, commas separate function arguments and array columns. In European, Latin American, and other continental locales where a comma marks decimals, spreadsheet engines use semicolons for function arguments to avoid ambiguity. This converter tokenizes formulas character by character, distinguishing structural delimiters from commas inside double-quoted text strings, single-quoted sheet names, and array literals. When converting to European syntax, array column commas become backslashes and decimal periods can optionally convert to decimal commas. Everything executes in your browser with zero network transmission.

The table below summarizes syntax transformations between comma and semicolon locales:

Questions

Why does Excel use semicolons instead of commas in some countries?

In countries that use a comma as the decimal separator (such as Germany, France, Spain, and Brazil), a formula like =IF(A1>10,5, 1, 0) would create syntax ambiguity between the decimal number 10.5 and the argument delimiters. Spreadsheet applications resolve this collision by requiring semicolons as parameter delimiters in comma-decimal regions.

Can I just use Find and Replace in a text editor?

Simple search and replace is dangerous because it indiscriminately replaces commas inside quoted text labels, escaped quotes, sheet tab names, and numeric constants. For example, ="Hello, world" would corrupt into ="Hello; world". This tool uses a contextual parser that protects quoted strings and preserves literal text intact.

Does changing punctuation also translate function names?

No. Punctuation conversion adjusts argument delimiters, array syntax, and decimal formats. Google Sheets and Excel Online use standard English function names (like IF and VLOOKUP) in all regions. However, desktop installations of Excel in non-English editions translate function names into the local language (e.g. WENN in German or SI in French and Spanish).

How do array constants differ between US and European Excel?

In US Excel, columns in array constants are separated by commas and rows by semicolons: {1, 2; 3, 4}. In European Excel with comma decimals, columns are separated by backslashes and rows by semicolons: {1\ 2; 3\ 4}. This tool updates array column separators accordingly.
